To all at the RSPCA, Patcham,

Back in May we adopted Spike, an 8 year old Staffie Cross. He is such a joy to have as a pet, and we love him so much!

He is fantastic with our 2 children, Lily and Rohan, 7 and 4, and very patient and kind to them. He is also  very well - behaved. We reward him with a comfy sofa to sleep on, as well as his own bed, lots of bones from the butchers, walks in the woods at Withdean and to Brighton (from Patcham), and look after him very well.

I would recommend a staffie to any family thinking of getting a dog. They are great with kids, and are good for getting you out of the house for a walk! I would also recommend getting an older dog, as he is still fit and healthy, and often walks for 4 to 8 miles with my husband, and still comes back full of energy.

We are celebrating our first Christmas with our dear friend Spike this year, so I thought I would drop you a line about him.

Hope you like the photos of Spike,
Sharon, Michael, Lily and Rohan Oliver.

The Story Of Our Collies!

The collies arrived at the shelter in February 2009 with their very own entourage of Inspectors, Animal Welfare Officers, Police and a vet! They were met by a group of staff who would be looking after them during their stay.

The two mums, Flo and Beth, were given their own kennels and the pups that were still alive were placed back carefully with mum. It then took approximately an hour and a half to get all the pups to suckle. The mums were amazingly patient with their babies. Little Maff was the weakest of them all, over the next few days he was encouraged to suckle, gradually he caught up with his siblings.

After lots of hard work, 10 months of care and lots of court hearings for the Inspectors, Police and Vet the collies previous owner was prosecuted and they eventually became ours.

Miss Ginnie was the first to go to her new home, followed by Upsy Daisy, Iggle Piggle and then the two mums who found a lovely home together. Next it was Little Maffs turn and then Dudie Duncan went to live with one of our dog walkers. It was hard to say goodbye to them but they are all brought to visit us when they can! Bess was homed next and then Antonio. Macca Pacca, Patch and Gyp have also now gone to their new homes.

Kane and Fizz

Mel and Lee kindly sent us an email and photo:

We adopted Kane (May 2009) - Chocolate Dobermann and Fizz (August 2009 - previously known as KD) - Mastiff cross puppy, from the Patcham RSPCA. I thought I would show you a picture of them together and how happy they are.

Kane, at first, was quite mopey, until we got Fizz and now they play together happily and he is like a big brother to her, she follows him around and loves sleeping on the sofa on top of him. Considering people think that Dobermanns and Mastiffs are scary - I would say these must be the soppiest two around..Thank you for letting us take them on and for the happiness (and entertainment) they give us...
