Welcome to the Website for Sussex, Brighton & East Grinstead

The Mid Sussex and Brighton Branch is run by an active committee of volunteers who are trustees of the Branch funds. The Branch is entirely self-funding.

The site at Braypool, Patcham, was given to the Branch in 1962. In recent years, an appeal has been launched to rebuild the Shelter. Most of that rebuilding programme is complete, giving us 65 kennels, a small animal unit, a hospital, pool area and exercise runs. Phase four of the rebuilding programme gave us a purpose-built cattery and isolation kennels. Recently phase five was completed giving us medical facilities to care for our animals, a training room and much needed space.  Phase six is now completed giving us 12 special care dog kennels.

Facilities are available for almost every animal until it is ready for re-homing or release. Over 3000 animals pass through each year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, goats, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, chickens, ferrets and various birds, both wild and domestic.

The RSPCA licence permits us to have a maximum of 90 dogs and 84 cats on site plus numerous other animals. As there is a non-destruction policy, we keep fairly full.

Over the last few years we have been able to take dogs and cats from other branches, including Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Lincoln, Slough, Cardiff and Swansea, and re-home them locally. We need your support to continue these most needed projects.

The Branch has to fund the Shelter, which runs at a deficit each year. Income is generated by fund-raising, special appeals, boarding of dogs and cats, shop sales and legacies and donations (if they specify the Mid Sussex and Brighton Branch).

A subsidized neutering scheme for cats and female dogs is offered to people on low incomes.

We rely on volunteers for many activities, such as dog walking, home-visiting, fund-raising and pet food collection.
